Fighting scenes in Thunderbolt (1995
AKA DeadHeat)
I personally didn't like
this movie. 4/10. The plot (if there is any) was terrible. I'd have to
say this but it was one of his worst in recent years. But not just because
of the script. The fighting-action scenes in this one sucked!
Have
a closer look at the guy in the garage scene in the early part of
the movie where Jackie (=supposedly) takes on a couple of yobs. Or
the guy fighting against Yakuzas (Japanese mafia) in the Pachinko
parlor.... Have you noticed anything? It's not Jackie himself who's
doing the fighting! And if you are a true Chan fan, you should have
figured out that the style this guy kicks, the way this guy punches
completely differ Jackie's. (On the right are some pics from the aciton
scene where we can clearly see that it is not Jackie doing the fights.)
There seems to be two people who doubled Chan in this sequence, one
guy mostly for the actual fighting scenes with a relatively shorter
hair than Chan, and another guy who seems to have done the acrobatics
such as some spinning action, with a longer hair length. The first
guy would be, with a good chance, Collin Chow who was formally known
as Ngai Sing, a used-to-be member of the Sammo Hung's Stunt Team.
The other doubler perhaps was Sam Wong Ming-Sing, a member of the
Sing Ga Ban. But anyway, they both do well keeping their faces away
from the camera, hiding it with arms etc.. |

I don't know why Jackie
didn't take part in the fighting himself. Perhaps he was short of time
from tough schedule. Maybe with the ankle injury from "Rumble in
the Bronx" on top of that. Or maybe he didn't get along so well with
Sammo. Or maybe they had different views against how to shoot the fighting
sequence, like the colision Jackie had on different views in "Drunken
Master 2" with Lau Kar-Leung. This part remains a mystery.
(Special
thanks to SAM.B and Big Mike for confirming the action-doubles.)
